What Is Psychosexual Therapy and How Can It Help You?

Updated: 4 days ago

Talking about sex isn’t always easy. In fact, for many people, it’s one of the hardest things to open up about—even with the person they’re sharing a bed or life with.

As a psychosexual therapist, I’ve worked with individuals and couples who have felt confused, anxious, disconnected, or ashamed when it comes to intimacy. And I want you to know: you’re not alone, and these challenges are more common than most people realise.

Psychosexual therapy (also known as sex therapy) is a specialist form of talking therapy that helps you explore emotional, relational, and psychological aspects of your sex life. Whether you’re experiencing painful sex, a lack of desire, erectile difficulties, or changes in intimacy while going through the perimenopause/menopause this work creates space for honest, supportive conversations- without judgment or pressure.

Many people assume sexual problems are purely physical, but that’s rarely the whole story. Often, difficulties with sex are linked to deeper emotional experiences like stress, shame, trauma, or unresolved relationship dynamics. In our sessions, we explore these connections using a range of approaches—cognitive, relational, behavioural, and somatic—to help you reconnect with your body, challenge limiting beliefs, and define what pleasure and intimacy mean for you.

You don’t need to be in a relationship to come to psychosexual therapy. You might be working through body image issues, struggling with confidence, or simply wanting to understand your sexual self more deeply.

If this resonates with you, you can read more about my approach here. Or, if you're ready, feel free to book an initial session—an open, no-pressure space for us to explore how therapy could support you.

Take care,

Rose
