My Integrative Approach

Everyone's reason for seeking counselling is different. You may be struggling with a particular issue, feeling stuck in familiar patterns, experiencing difficulties in your relationships, or simply wanting to understand yourself more deeply.

You don't need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. Many people come to counselling feeling confused, overwhelmed or unsure of where to begin. Together, we can explore what is happening, make sense of your experiences and identify what may be keeping you stuck.

Sometimes a problem that appears isolated at first is connected to other areas of life. As therapy unfolds, we may begin to notice links between past experiences, current relationships, emotions and behaviours. Understanding these connections can create opportunities for greater self-awareness, new perspectives and lasting change.

Over the years, I have supported clients with a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, stress, bereavement, trauma, abuse, bullying, discrimination, sexual violence, relationship difficulties, separation and divorce, cultural and identity issues, LGBTQI+ experiences, gender and sexuality concerns, intercultural adjustment, suicidal thoughts, and challenges associated with perimenopause and menopause.

Whatever brings you to counselling, there is no right or wrong reason to seek support. Therapy offers a dedicated space to reflect, explore and work towards the changes that feel important to you.

The initial session provides an opportunity for us to explore what has brought you to therapy, what you would like support with, and whether we feel like a good fit to work together. As therapy progresses, we will regularly review your goals to ensure our work remains focused on what matters most to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is therapy and how can it help?

Therapy provides a dedicated space where you can explore the challenges you are facing. It is a collaborative process between you and your therapist, designed to help you gain a deeper understanding of your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. By exploring these experiences in a supportive environment, you can identify recurring patterns, make sense of past experiences, and develop strategies for navigating current difficulties. Therapy can help you build emotional resilience, improve your relationships, and lead to positive changes in your overall well-being.

Is there a difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

In the UK, the terms 'counselling' and 'psychotherapy' are often used interchangeably, and there is no legal distinction between the two. Both involve talking therapies designed to support emotional well-being and personal growth. Some people view counselling as focusing on specific current issues over a shorter period, while psychotherapy might involve deeper exploration of long-standing patterns and past experiences. However, many therapists, including myself, work integratively, tailoring their approach to meet each client's unique needs, regardless of whether the process is called counselling or psychotherapy.

Are you a qualified professional?

Yes, I am a qualified therapist. I hold a Diploma in Integrative Counselling and I am also a qualified Psychosexual & Relationship Therapist with a master's level diploma. I am an Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and a member of the College of Sexual & Relationship Therapists (COSRT). I adhere to their ethical frameworks, which ensure that I maintain high standards of professional practice and continue my professional development through regular training and supervision.

What can I expect in the first session?

The initial session is an opportunity for us to meet and explore what has brought you to therapy. We will discuss your goals, your concerns, and what you hope to achieve. It is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about the therapeutic process and for us to see if we feel comfortable working together. We will also cover practical matters such as frequency of sessions, fees, and confidentiality.

Is everything I say confidential?

Confidentiality is a fundamental part of the therapeutic process. What you share in our sessions remains private. The only exceptions are if I have serious concerns about your safety or the safety of someone else, or if I am legally required to disclose information. In most cases, I would discuss the need to break confidentiality with you first. I also discuss my work with a clinical supervisor to ensure I am providing the best possible support, but your identity remains anonymous during these discussions.

How long does therapy last?

The duration of therapy varies significantly depending on your individual needs and the complexity of the issues we are exploring. Some people find that a few months of focused work are sufficient to achieve their goals, while others benefit from a longer-term therapeutic relationship that spans a year or more. We will regularly review our progress together to ensure that therapy continues to be helpful and meaningful for you.

What Approach Do You Use?

I use an integrative approach, meaning I draw on different therapeutic models depending on your individual needs and goals. My work is rooted in humanistic counselling, which places importance on understanding your unique experience and building a supportive therapeutic relationship based on trust, empathy and collaboration. Where appropriate, I may also incorporate psychoeducation and practical resources to help you better understand yourself, your relationships and the challenges you're facing.

What Happens in the First Session?

The first session is an opportunity for us to meet and explore what has brought you to therapy. During this session, we will:

Discuss your reasons for seeking support and what you hope to achieve.
Explore your current circumstances and any relevant background information.
Go over practical details such as session frequency, fees and confidentiality.
Consider whether my approach feels like the right fit for your needs.

There is no obligation to continue after the first session.

Do You Offer Any Other Types of Therapy?

Yes. In addition to counselling, I offer relationship therapy and psychosexual therapy (sex therapy). These specialist services support individuals and couples experiencing difficulties with communication, intimacy, desire, sexual concerns, trust, conflict, relationship challenges and life transitions. If you're unsure which type of therapy is most appropriate, we can discuss your needs during our initial session and decide together how best to move forward.

How Do I Get Started

Embarking on therapy is a brave decision. I aim to make your start simple and clear. We begin by discussing your goals and practicalities like frequency and confidentiality to ensure the right path forward.

Schedule your first meeting via my website to explore your reasons for seeking support and see how we can work together to achieve your unique goals.

2. Discuss Your Objectives

In our first session, we will go over your needs, what you are hoping to achieve and session frequency. There is no right or wrong reason for seeking help; we focus on what matters.

3. Regular Reviews & Growth

We will continuously adjust and review your objectives throughout our sessions, ensuring that we remain on the right path toward your desired therapeutic outcome.
